What Does The Future Hold For Kane, Man City, And Tottenham Hotspur?

Pep Guardiola, Manchester City Manager, may have to deal with this year without a recognized striker

Harry Kane dispelled doubts about his future by confirming that he is staying at Tottenham this season on Wednesday.

The British captain, long-term replacement to Sergio Aguero, has been interested in Manchester City.

But even the vast riches possessed by the Premier League Champions of Abu-Dhabi could not persuade Spurs President Daniel Levy to sell, since Kane’s contract lasted three years.

AFP Sport examines what Kane stays means for Tottenham, City, and the player.

His wish to leave his boyhood club was not to end his career, known only for individual prizes and milestones.

At the age of 28, he still did not win a trophy for clubs and countries. He viewed City as the safe bet to fulfill his desire for silverware, winning five of the previous 10 Premier League championships.

Spurs failed to qualify for the Champions League in the second straight season and Kane may on Thursday be pressured to save his team from 1-0 deficits to the Europa Conference League group round.

Kane was, however, also aware of the necessity to make bridges with the fans of Spurs, who had been dismissed by the guy they name “one of our own”

Despite concerns about his future, Kane received a stimulating welcome from a distance when he returned to Wolves on Sunday and referred to the fact that he would remain.

“It was incredible to see the reception from the Spurs fans on Sunday and to read some of the messages of support I’ve had in the last few weeks,” tweeted Kane.

Aguero in Manchester’s past years have been struck by injury, but last season City made light of the game without a recognized striker, storming the Premier League and the Champions League Finale for the first time.

Pep Guardiola nevertheless wants Kane to guarantee the goals that his bevy of brilliant midfielders had produced.

Lack of a focal point in the city was shown by losing 1-0 to Chelsea in the Champions League finals in May and the season-opening weekend to a Kane-less Tottenham.

Guardiola maintained that he would be pleased with his team even if Kane does not leave.

But Cristiano Ronaldo, who was the centerpiece, this time for the blue half of Manchester, of a spectacular return to England, is a possible back-up.

The town has already surpassed this record of transferring the English to Jack Grealish, spending £100 million ($139 million) on adding Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden, Ferran Torres, Bernardo Silva, Riyadh Mahrez, and Gabriel Jesus to the front line.

But if City again fails in the Champions League, they may regret not having achieved their main goal.

“It is great news for everybody,” said Nuno Espirito Santo, the new manager of Tottenham, who can now be looking forward to his first season with Kane at his side.

The Portuguese had a strong beginning and took maximum points in two games in the Premier League, despite Kane’s lone late replacement against Wolves.

The goal of Nuno is to bring the Spurs back in the Champions League, but Kane has to do his best to upgrade one of the four major players from City, Chelsea, Manchester United, or Liverpool.

Levy’s uncompromising attitude was rewarded with his valuable assets.

With a six-year deal still to be concluded for three years, Spurs may be allowed to charge a price far beyond the record amount City paid for Grealish.

Even with wealth, Levy understood that Spurs could not recruit a successor on the same level and also had to retain supporters on their side to fill the 62,000-stadium club that has been vacant for more than a year, owing to the epidemic of coronavirus.
