Somi, a GRAMMY-nominated vocalist, composer, and jazz musician, has released a track named ‘House of the Rising Sun,’ the first of two songs to be released ahead of her upcoming album, ‘Zenzile: The Reimagining Of Miriam Makeba,’ which is due to be published on March 4, 2022.
This new record, to be published on the artist’s Salon Africana label, is a dedication to the late great South African singer, composer, and civil rights activist Miriam Makeba for her significant musical contributions and social justice in the continent, notably in South Africa.
Somi sings interpretations of some of Makeba’s most well-known records on the album, which includes both original compositions by Makeba and covers. Seun Kuti, Grammy Award winners Angelique Kidjo and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Gregory Porter, and other African music heavyweights make special appearances.
This release date is selected to honor Makeba, known as ‘Mama Africa’ during her lifetime, on what would have been her 90th birthday, and on March 19, Somi will organize a celebration for the release of this historical record with a star-studded performance at New York’s famous Apollo Theater.
Somi, 33, is of Rwandan and Ugandan origin and currently resides in the United States of America, where she immigrated as a teenager. She was the first African-American woman to be nominated for a Grammy in any jazz category at the 62nd Grammy Awards in 2020.
Spotify, the global music streaming giant, announced its partnership with Somi as the newest African performer to join its EQUAL Music Program in late 2021. Spotify’s EQUAL Music Program is a global project designed to promote gender equality in music and support female creators under a single brand.
