Cristiano Ronaldo declares love for Portugal despite suffering World Cup qualification heartbreak
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has sent a heartwarming note to Portuguese fans, gushing about his love for the country. The 36-year-old is on his way back to club duties, but penned an emotional letter about his country while he journeyed in his private jet.
Ronaldo said that despite all his travels, it is only in the Iberian nation that he and his family ‘feel at home.’ The all-time men’s international goalscorer took to his Instagram page to share his feelings about Portugal, along with a beautiful picture of him and his pregnant partner Georgina Rodriguez.
“No matter how far the world we travel, it is always in Portugal that my family and I feel at home. The fantastic climate, the wonderful food, the affection of the Portuguese people, it’s always a pleasure to come back to my country,” Ronaldo wrote.
The Manchester United forward only mentioned Manchester (the city) in passing as he stated that he is now returning to England to ‘focus completely on our goals.’ But not without looking forward to the next time he’ll be in Portugal again.
The 5-time Ballon d’Or winner concluded: “It’s time to go back to Manchester and focus completely on our goals, but we’ll be back soon. See you now, Portugal!”
Ronaldo suffered World Cup qualification heartbreak during the latest round of fixtures as Serbia earned a last-gasp 2-1 victory at the Estadio da Luz, Lisbon to snatch automatic qualification from the Euro 2016 Champions. Portugal will now go through a congested 12-team playoff for one of three additional tickets to the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Before that, the 36-year-old will be hoping to turn around United’s fortunes when club football resumes this weekend. Crucial fixtures against Watford (away), Villarreal (away), Chelsea (away), and Arsenal (home) are to be navigated within the next 14 days. The Red Devils are sixth on the EPL table, nine points adrift of Chelsea in the first position.
