F1: Mercedes finally withdraw Appeal against Abu Dhabi GP result

Mercedes team will no longer appeal the results of last Sunday’s Abu Dhabi season finale

Mercedes have decided to back down on their plans to appeal the result of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix result last Sunday. This decision comes following the FIA’s resolve to conduct a ”detailed analysis” of the end of the race amidst talks that it was tarnishing the F1’s image.

Mercedes have welcomed this move by the governing body and stated that it would hold FIA “accountable” in any event.

Recall that Mercedes had previously had two protests of appeal rejected earlier this week.

According to Mercedes, they protested against the results of the race “because the safety car regulations were applied in a new way that affected the race result, after Lewis had been in a commanding lead and on course to win the World Championship”.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton lost out to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in dramatic fashion during the last lap at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi.

Mercedes have now congratulated Verstappen and Red Bull as well in a statement saying,

“We would like to express our sincere respect for your achievements this season. You made this F1 championship title fight truly epic.”

The Constructors Title holders Mercedes had 96 hours after the race to lodge their appeal, which would have been heard by the FIA’s International Court of Appeal, the final appeal tribunal for international motorsport.

Mercedes said they had been in “constructive dialogue” with the FIA since the race in an attempt to “create clarity for the future”.

In a lengthy statement, they said they “welcomed” the FIA inviting teams and drivers to take part in the investigation in case of future occurrence.
